Purpose of the role:
To lead and manage all on-site production operations to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable manufacturing output. The Production Manager is responsible for delivering daily production targets, maintaining plant availability, optimising resources, and ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and environmental standards. This role drives continuous improvement in operational performance, team capability, and production processes.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Asset Management
Oversee maintenance strategy, including preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance activities. Ensure asset performance, uptime, and reliability targets are met. Collaborate with the Maintenance Supervisor to manage work orders, CMMS accuracy, and spare-parts inventory. Lead plant shutdowns, commissioning, and upgrade projects.
People Leadership & Team Development
Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management for production and maintenance teams. Ensure workforce planning, shift scheduling, and staffing levels meet production demands. Promote a strong culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement. Identify skills gaps and develop training plans for operational and technical roles.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
Ensure all activities are executed in compliance with safety policies and regulatory standards. Conduct safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations. Champion safe working behaviour and drive continuous improvement in safety performance.
Quality & Compliance
Ensure products meet required specifications and quality standards. Address deviations, non-conformances, and root-cause investigations. Collaborate with QA/QC teams to maintain certification, audit readiness, and compliance documentation.
Continuous Improvement & Performance Optimisation
Lead Lean, Six Sigma, or other improvement projects to reduce waste and increase efficiency. Analyse performance data to identify bottlenecks and improvement opportunities. Drive 5S, Kaizen, OEE improvement, and standardised work initiatives.
Budget & Cost Control
Manage operational budget, cost control, and resource allocation. Track and reduce production cost per unit through optimisation strategies. Ensure cost-effective use of materials, utilities, and workforce.

Key requirements:
- Chemical Engineering qualification
- Production plant experience
- Experience with caustic products / caustic soda / soda ash / chemical plants highly advantageous
- 16.2 legal appointment highly advantageous
- Ability to converse confidently in Afrikaans
- The role is site based in the East Rand
- Experience with shutdown and plant commissioning activities
- Staff management experience within an operational/production environment
- Lean Six Sigma / Kaizen experience
- Working knowledge of Microsoft products
- Working knowledge of work planning and scheduling tools
